Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he would like to use the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo as an opportunity to showcase Japan.
Abe spoke at a reception held by the Japanese Olympic Committee near the Winter Olympic venue in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Saturday.
He said Olympic athletes offer inspiration and encouragement to children who see their future in them, and to people living in disaster-hit areas who are cheering in front of their televisions. He said this spirit will be passed on to the Tokyo games.
Abe said the 2020 games will be a festival for the whole country, and that he will try to make it an opportunity for each person in Japan to connect with the world, and for the world to discover Japan.
He then visited the Olympic Village in Gangneung to encourage athletes who will take part in events such as speed skating and figure skating.
