THREE foreign vessels were detained for illegal fishing activities in Brunei waters, within the past week.
The Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) ship, KDB Darussalam, intercepted a foreign trawler in the Brunei Bay on September 30, and apprehended another on the morning of October 1.
According to a statement from Ministry of Defence (MinDef), 19 foreign fishermen were found on board the two trawlers.
The vessels were impounded, while the fishermen were handed over to the Marine Police, in the presence of a representative from the Fisheries Department.
Only a few days before, on September 28, the KDB Darussalam detained a foreign trawler with 12 fishermen on board.
“The capture of these vessels should serve as a warning that illegal fishing activities in Brunei waters are taken very seriously by the authorities,” said the MinDef in its statement.
The RBN has so far intercepted seven fishing vessels encroaching into Brunei waters, this year.
