PETALING JAYA: Technocrats are being considered by the prime minister to fill vacant positions in the Cabinet, according to a government source.
There are three more minister’s positions and several deputy ministerships left to be filled, probably by politicians appointed to the Senate.
“The senators will come equitably from all parties, though there will also be technocrats because they are needed to strengthen certain ministries,” said the source.
Another source said most of the remaining Cabinet positions will be filled by those from PPBM and Amanah.
FMT was told yesterday that DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong was likely to be appointed deputy defence minister. Liew refused to confirm or deny when asked if he was informed of his appointment as deputy to Mohamad Sabu, the defence minister.
The deputy ministers have yet to be appointed for the Defence, Economic Affairs, Housing and Local Government, and Foreign Affairs portfolios.
Bernama reported today that Amanah president Mohamad Sabu had confirmed submitting a list of “at least five” people from the party for consideration as senators. He said they comprised Amanah leaders from Kelantan and Terengganu.
“We proposed several names. It is now up to Tun Dr Mahathir to choose, but we don’t know when he will make his decision,” he told reporters at an event in Terengganu, adding that other parties had also submitted names for Senate appointments.
